Ice Cube says his refusal to receive the COVID-19 vaccine cost him some big bucks. The actor and rapper revealed that he lost $9 million because he did not get vaccinated against the virus and thus could not star in a movie. While he didn’t name the film project, it was reported last year that Ice Cube was dropped from Sony’s Oh Hell No over his vaccination status.
During a Nov. 20 appearance on the Million Dollaz Worth of Game podcast, Ice Cube seemingly confirmed that he was let go from the film because he did not abide by the vaccine requirement on set.
“I turned down a movie because I didn’t want to get the motherfucking jab,” he said, per Variety. “I turned down $9 million. I didn’t want get the jab. Fuck that jab. Fuck ya’ll for trying to make me get it.”
He added, “I don’t know how Hollywood feels about me right now.”
During a later segment of the podcast episode, Ice Cube clarified his comments about missing out on the $9 million film role, telling the hosts he “didn’t turn down” the opportunity because he was not vaccinated, but explaining, “Those motherfuckers didn’t give it to me because I wouldn’t get the shot.”
“I didn’t turn it down. They just wouldn’t give it to me,” he said. “The covid shot, the jab…I didn’t need it. I didn’t catch that shit at all. Nothing. Fuck them. I didn’t need that shit.”
Oh Hell No, the film Ice Cube was reportedly set to star in, also features Jack Black and comes from director Kitao Sakurai, the filmmaker behind Eric André‘s Bad TripThe Hollywood Reporter reported in October 2021 that Ice Cube left the film “after declining a request from producers to get vaccinated.”
At the time of Ice Cube’s exit, Oh Hell No was set to film in Hawaii that winter, and THR reported that Sony was looking for a replacement for the actor. Since the 2021 report, there have been no updates on who filled Ice Cube’s role (and nabbed that $9 million paycheck), but Black is still set to star.
