Best Of Broadway 2022 And A Look Ahead At 2023 — Deadline … – Deadline

By Greg Evans

The news wasn’t all grim for Broadway during 2022. Some shows actually defied the lingering effects of Covid and the drop in New York tourism and became no-doubt-about-it hits, with ticket-buyers filling seats at Funny Girl and The Music Man and The Phantom of the Opera (!), with even riskier fare like Leopoldstadt, Kimberly Akimbo and A Strange Loop finding audiences.
True, if overall box office was stronger, more evenly spread out among productions and New York City tourism back to pre-pandemic levels — some estimates suggest that the 56 million-plus total visitors to NYC during 2022 is about 85% of pre-Covid 2019 levels — Kimberly and Loop might be doing better than just get-along numbers, and excellent shows like Hangmen, The Minutes and Topdog/Underdog wouldn’t have had to struggle. Maybe a work of true inspiration like Ain’t No Mo’ wouldn’t have had to post early closing notices, and a genre- and demographic-expanding show like KPOP could have lasted long enough to get a foothold.
So where’s the good news? On the stage. The year 2022 welcomed some truly wonderful productions to Broadway, from the brand-name commercial enticements of Some Like It Hot, The Piano Lesson and Into the Woods to thought-provoking and edgier work (Topdog/Underdog, Strange Loop, Hangmen) that rewarded audience willingness to take chances.
Here, then, is my list of the Best Broadway Shows of 2022. Each entry includes my initial reaction to the show as stated in Deadline reviews, and a “further thoughts” update. (Note: This list was compiled before I had a chance to see Between Riverside and Crazy.)
