American actress Xochitl Gomez is receiving hate on social media over a scene in Marvel’s upcoming movie Dr Strange 2, which she stars in.
The 15-year-old from Los Angeles played Dawn Schafer in Season 1 of Netflix’s The Baby-Sitters Club before being cast as America Chavez in Marvel’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in 2020.
America Chavez is the latest Young Avenger to be introduced into the Marvel Cinematic Universe and is a lesbian who also has two lesbian parents.
Due to one of her LGBTQ+ scenes, the movie is being opposed in certain regions and the star’s personal social media accounts are being horrifically targeted as a result.
As reported by The Guardian, Saudi Arabia has asked Disney to cut a certain LGBTQ+ scene from its upcoming Dr Strange movie before it is shown in the region.
The scene in question sees America Chavez referring to her “two moms”, which Saudi Arabia’s general supervisor of cinema classification Nawaf Alsabhan said is “very tough to pass” in Saudi Arabia.
“It’s just her talking about her moms, because she has two moms. And being in the Middle East, it’s very tough to pass something like this,” he claimed. Xochitl also reportedly wears a LGBTQ+ rainbow pin in the scene.
Earlier reports said that the movie had been banned in Saudi Arabia and other regions, which isn’t true. “It will never be banned. There’s no reason to ban the film. It’s a simple edit,” Alsabhan added.
However, Saudi Arabia is strongly opposing the LGBTQ+ scene and will not stop trying to get it cut from the movie.
Alasbhan claimed that Disney has refused to remove the scene before saying “we haven’t closed the door. We’re still trying”.
Following the scene’s opposition in many regions, Xochitl has been personally targeted on social media.
A viral tweet shows screenshots from her recent Instagram post that reveal some of the horrific comments some internet users have posted.
“Ur the reason why I can’t watch the movie on cinema,” one comment reads whilst another says: “We all hate you.”
The nasty comments have been flooding the star’s Instagram and TikTok comments over the past few days.
